WAILUKU >> Shark attack victim Julie Glance was released from Maui Memorial Medical Center yesterday as state and county officials were trying to figure out what type of shark bit her.

Glance, 34, an amateur triathlete, is scheduled to leave Maui tomorrow night with her family and return to her home in San Diego, where she works as a chief executive officer at a federal credit union.

"She's doing OK," said her husband, Robert Glance II.

He said his wife was still taking pain pills and antibiotics. He said in about 10 days, she will need a hard cast for her lower right arm.

The Glances, including their 5-month-old son and 2-year-old daughter, arrived on Maui last Friday and were visiting the island with Julie's parents.

Julie Glance, who has been to Maui a couple of times, was swimming alone more than 100 yards offshore near Embassy Vacation Resorts Kaanapali when she was attacked by a shark Sunday morning.

Hawaii Shark Task Force spokesman Randy Honebrink said that based on interviews, including talks with Glance, he does not feel the attacker was a white-tip shark.

County and state officials said a 5-foot white-tip shark was seen in the vicinity of the site a few hours after the attack.

Earlier this week, Glance said she thought the shark had a white tip. Honebrink said he showed Glance photographs of various sharks. He said the white seen by Glance might have been a white blur from the sun.

Honebrink also said state officials have not ruled out a tiger shark.

"Nobody got a good enough look to say for sure," he said.

County lifeguards shut down water activities at beaches from Mala Wharf to Black Rock from about 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday after a 6-foot reef shark was sighted in waters off the Hyatt Regency Maui.
