Family Court offers divorce law seminar

The Family Court of the First Circuit will present "Divorce Law in Hawaii" Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Supreme Court conference room, on the second floor of Aliiolani Hale at 417 S. King St.

The free program features divorce attorney William C. Darrah, who will give an overview of custody and visitation, division of property, child support, alimony and other matters relating to divorce.

Darrah specializes in financially complex matrimonial matters and is editor of the monthly Journal of Hawaii Family Law and the annual Hawaii Divorce Manual.

Adoption group to hold informational meeting

Adoption Connection is holding an informational meeting for families interested in opening their homes to special-needs children.

The meeting will be held Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. at the Casey Family Programs, 1848 Nuuanu Ave.

Iolani School opens to more sixth-graders

Iolani School is accepting 50 new sixth-grade students for the 2003-2004 academic year.

The admission process includes an application, SSAT testing and a group activity.

Iolani increased its admission to 50 new sixth-grade students from about 20 because of the higher number of elementary schools discontinuing sixth grade.

Iolani is also expanding its campus by adding a new building, which will contain 32 classrooms, a computer lab, an advanced placement biology lab, four physics labs, a college counseling office and a large hall for meetings and performances.

The new building will be finished in May.

Cancer support group to meet at Pali Momi

US TOO, a prostate cancer support group, will meet on the third Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. in the ground-floor conference room at Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali Momi.

Police seek motorist who hit truck on H-1

Police are looking for the driver of a car that sideswiped a pickup truck on the H-1 Freeway yesterday, causing the truck to roll over. Witnesses told police the car was speeding and traveling erratically in the west-bound lanes near the Waipahu Street overpass about 5 p.m. The car struck the truck and the driver of the truck lost control of the truck, police said.

The truck driver suffered a large cut to his arm and a dislocated wrist. The driver of the car stopped about a quarter of a mile away before getting out of the car and running away.

2 men seriously hurt when truck struck tree

Two men were injured seriously today after their pickup crashed into a tree in Ewa.

A 19-year-old man was in critical condition at Queen's Medical Center this morning, while a 23-year-old man was reported in guarded condition.

Police said the crash occurred about 1:20 a.m. at the corner of Renton Road and Orrick Street. Both men were taken to St. Francis Medical Center West in critical condition and then transported to Queen's by medevac helicopter.

Makakilo woman says boyfriend burned her

Police arrested a 30-year-old man after he allegedly beat his girlfriend and burned her finger on the stove in Makakilo yesterday morning.

Police said the 26-year-old victim called 911 about 12:20 a.m. Her boyfriend was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and abuse of a household or family member. The victim was not injured seriously and refused medical treatment.

Man says he was shot while on his lanai

Police are investigating the shooting of a Sunset Beach man who was standing on his lanai yesterday when someone shot him in the shoulder.

The victim, who was not seriously injured, had been the victim of a burglary last week, during which 10 firearms were stolen from his home.

The 49-year-old victim said he was getting ready for bed when he was struck by a round fired from the beach, police said. He ran to a neighbor's home for help and was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital where he was treated and released.

Alleged punch to eye gets suspect arrested

Police arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly punching another man in the eye at Kawela Bay about a week ago.

The victim, 20, reported that he was drinking with friends at the park about 3 a.m. on Nov. 11 when the suspect, an acquaintance, walked up and punched him. The suspect told the victim to stop talking to his girlfriend, he reported.

After the victim spotted him at Zippy's in Kaneohe and called police, the suspect was arrested for investigation of second-degree assault and released pending investigation.

HONOLULU

Kalihi man charged with assaulting wife

A 25-year-old was arrested and charged with second-degree assault for allegedly assaulting his wife at their Kalihi home Thursday morning.

Paulo Tilia turned himself in at the Kalihi Police Station Saturday. His bail was set at $20,000. His wife suffered a broken nose.

Downed pole closes Kamehameha Highway

Police closed Kamehameha Highway in Kaaawa near Crouching Lion for several hours yesterday after a motorist knocked down a utility pole to avoid hitting a dog.

Police said the woman, driving a black Mazda pickup, was Kahuku bound about 10:50 a.m. when she struck a pole that anchors the electrical pole. The highway was blocked in both directions until workers removed the pole. The highway was reopened at about 2:45 p.m.

Police said the woman was taken to Kahuku Hospital for minor injuries and released.

NEIGHBOR ISLANDS

Hiker has miscarriage after rescue on Kauai

A 34-year-old woman who was eight months pregnant suffered a miscarriage Saturday night after hiking 11 miles into the Kalalau trail, said Kauai Fire Department officials.

The woman and a companion asked another hiker for help yesterday morning, said Lihue Battalion Chief Ernest Moniz.

The hiker and others scrawled an SOS into the sand, Moniz said. People on a tour helicopter spotted the SOS and called the fire department about 9:20 a.m., he said.

The woman and her companion were flown to Princeville where they were transported to Wilcox Hospital, Moniz said.
