SONICFLOOd on stage

Contemporary Christian rock band SONICFLOOd will be featured at Fusion 2002, a youth worship event being held at the Farrington High School Auditorium 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday.

The group has been synonymous with the onset of the youth-oriented praise and worship movement throughout America. Over the past two years, SONICFLOOd has garnered a Dove Award-winning record and a recent Grammy nomination. The band's self-proclaimed mission is to "create music that will usher people into the presence of God."

Fusion 2002 is exclusively for high and middle school students. The event's main speaker will be Wayne Cordeiro, senior pastor for the New Hope Christian Fellowship.

Tickets are $20, available from partnering church youth groups or Hawaii Youth for Christ Campus Life clubs. Call 946-1300.

Beaders meet

The Bead Society will be hosting a basic wire workshop and bead jam as part of its meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The meeting is open to anyone interested in beading. Call 487-2090.

9/11 impact discussed

The Japan-America Society of Hawaii is presenting "Immigration: Impact from 9/11," a panel session discussing the monitoring of visas issued to foreigners requesting entry into the United States, and whether the increased scrutiny is hampering Hawaii's program to encourage foreign entrepreneurs from establishing businesses here, and making travel and the entry of foreign students to Hawaii's schools more difficult.

The event begins with registration at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, followed by lunch and the panel at Hawaii Tokai International College.

Eric Kawatani of the law firm McCorriston Miller Mukai MacKinnon LLP will moderate the session, with panelists Emogene Estores, an economic development specialist from the state; David Gulick, examinations assistant director from the Immigration and Naturalization Service; and Bernard Chong, associate director of international admissions at Hawaii Pacific University.

To register call 524-4450.

Funds for health

The Public Health Fund committee of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii is accepting applications for funding of health-related projects.

Applicants must be nonprofit organizations operating on Oahu, seeking grants for health education or research projects for which no other funds are available. Preference is given to collaborative projects.

Grants have been awarded for projects that encourage lifestyles for future health, AIDS education, mental health programs, cholesterol and diabetes screening, serving the homeless and hungry, assistance of the disabled, drug abuse prevention and disease prevention and diagnosis.

Application deadline is Dec. 16. For an application packet, call the chamber at 545-4300 or e-mail phf@cochawaii.org.

Writers wanted

The Hawaii chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators is seeking manuscript submissions in conjunction with an upcoming conference. Entries will be critiqued by a professional in the field of children's literature, and the best will be forwarded to Samantha McFerrin, an editor at Chronicle Books.

McFerrin, who edits picture books, will be the featured speaker at SCBWI-Hawaii's winter conference, Feb. 22.

Writers may submit as many manuscripts as they like. Each must be accompanied by a $30 reading fee ($25 for SCBWI members). Make checks payable to SCBWI-Hawaii. Include a separate self-addressed, stamped envelope for each manuscript sent.

Send to: SCBWI Manuscript Critique, c/o CLH/English Department, 1733 Donaghho Road, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu 96822. Manuscripts must be postmarked by Nov. 27. For specific guidelines on length and format contact SCBWI at 779-5910.
