Defending Vans Triple Crown of Surfing champion Myles Padaca eased his way into the second round at the Vans Hawaiian Pro yesterday. Padaca takes on Pat O'Connell (USA), Jonathan Gonzales (Canary Islands) and Raoni Monteiro (Brazil) in his next heat.

Pancho puts it together

Pancho Sullivan opened up his Triple Crown campaign with the highest heat score of the Vans Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa yesterday, getting 16.6 points out of a total of 20.

Sullivan, 29, has long been considered one of the strongest Vans Triple Crown title campaigners. A veteran of big surf at venues like Sunset Beach, Sullivan's local knowledge proved impossible to overcome.

Defending champion Myles Padaca advanced through his six-man first-round heat in third place behind Jonathan Gonzalez and Raoni Monteiro.

Others to advance from round two included Toby Martin, Hawaii's Bruce Irons and Danilo Costa.

Hawaii's Jason Shibata, Joel Centeio and Kekoa Bacalso also advanced.

The first round of the women's Roxy Pro did not start yesterday, but is expected to take to the water on the next day of competition.

The total holding period for the Vans Hawaiian Pro and Roxy Pro is Nov. 12-23. A total of four days are required to run both events to completion.

The swell is expected to decrease into today with the present inclement weather forecast to break up as the weekend progresses.

Seasiders swim past Silverswords again

Jordan Brink and Vanja Kalabic each scored three goals and the Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo team turned back Chaminade 8-7 in overtime at Laie last night.

It was the fourth time in five meetings that the Seasiders have beaten the Silverswords. Sasha Stankovic came up with 11 saves and Mike Rieben and Kirk Mitchell each scored a goal.

Both teams will head to the Western Water Polo Association playoffs, which will be held in San Diego Nov. 22-23. They will learn their seedings tomorrow.

Chang, Chun honored at Quarterback Club

The Honolulu Quarterback Club will honor Hawaii's Tim Chang and KGMB's Liz Chun as its sports persons of the month of October at its weekly meeting Monday.

UH athletic director Herman Frazier, offensive coordinator Wes Suan and defensive line coach Vantz Singletary will speak, as will Terry Steiner, who is the coach of the U.S. women's wrestling team.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant in Honolulu and the program begins promptly at noon.

Fribley, Wie lead after first day of state open

Chad Fribley shot a 68 to grab the lead after the first day of the Hawaii State Open at Makena, Maui, yesterday.

Fribley leads Tom Eubank and amateur Jonathan Ota by a single stroke.

Michelle Wie leads the women's division with a score of 67, six better than Dawn Kaneshiro's second-place score.

Mike Iyoki and Larry Stubblefield are tied atop the senior division after shooting 69s.

The tournament will run through tomorrow.

Hawaii swimmers swept by Santa Barbara

Hawaii had four swimmers and both divers win two competitions each, but the men's and women's swim teams lost to UC Santa Barbara at a dual meet in Santa Barbara, Calif., yesterday.

The men lost 170-117 and the women lost 181-105.

Kurt Boehm, Tudor Ignat, Yan Chen, Maggie Roberts, Mike Gowdy and Cheyne Bloch all won multiple events for Hawaii.

Bloch and Ignat also helped the men win two relays, the 400-yard free and the 200-yard medley.
