LIHUE, Kauai >> Kailua's Bronson Teramoto rolled a 1,351 to lead the Surfriders yesterday in the opening day of the AT&T Wireless/Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Bowling championships.

Jesse Cummings of Pearl City was the individual boys leader after a 1,373 at Lihue Lanes, but Kailua led the team competition.

The Surfriders (5,889) are ahead, with the Chargers (5,743) and Hawaii Baptist (5,602) close behind.

Pearl City is atop the girls standings heading into today's final rounds with a 5,257.

Hawaii Baptist (4,917), Kapolei (4,753) and Kealakehe (4,717) trail.

Starr Hamamoto of Hilo leads the girls with a 1,125. Jodi-Ann Gum of Pearl City (1,118) Cherish Saunders of Kapolei (1,113), Terryn Howard of Maui (1,110) and HBA's Mika Shimabukuro and Kapolei's Samantha Masuda (with 1,100s) are right on her tail.

Teramoto, the Oahu Interscholastic Association champion, is seeking his first state title. He was the state runner-up last year to Pearl City's Ryan Chang.

The Kailua boys team is also seeking its first championship.

Cummings rolled a high game yesterday of 258 in his final game of the day. His low score was 183.

Teramoto posted a high of 248 in his opening game, and a low of 203.

On the girls side, Hamamoto's top game was 208. Gum rolled a high of 212. Castle's Kara Shiraki had a high of 236.
