Kalani girls out,
Kalaheo in for states

The Kalani girls volleyball team has forfeited its Oahu Interscholastic Association playoff win over Kalaheo and will not be going to the state tournament in Hilo next week.

The Lady Falcons learned that they had an ineligible player in that game and decided to forfeit the game. Their decision opened the way for Kalaheo to take their place in the tournament.

"I think we had a lot of expectations for ourselves, but honesty is everything and it always comes back at you," Kalani coach Tehani Fiatoa said.

A teacher at the school found that one of the Kalani players was ineligible for the game during a grade check, and reported it to the principal. By the start of practice after the school day, Fiatoa had to inform her girls that they would not be going to the tournament.

"They knew before I did," Fiatoa said. "I only had to set things straight for them. I just want it to be known that we are an honest school and I had no knowledge of an ineligible player at any time."
