Rose invited
to Hula Bowl


Harvard quarterback Neil Rose was extended an invitation to play in the Hula Bowl on Maui, a source familiar with the situation confirmed yesterday.

The former University High player is the second quarterback with Hawaii ties to receive an invite for the college all-star game set for Feb. 1 at War Memorial Stadium. The other is Washington State quarterback Jason Gesser. The former St. Louis School standout was asked to play in the game last August.

Rose has two games left in the Ivy League. He is the conference's top-rated quarterback, completing 104 of 150 passes for 1,242 yards and eight touchdowns.

Hayashi, Yokomoto lead teams to tie

Kevin Hayashi led his team to a first-place tie with Beau Yokomoto's group at the Hawaii State Open-Oakley Pro-Am at the Makena Golf Courses yesterday.

The Oakley Pro-Am kicks off the Hawaii State Open.

Hauashi scored a 67 and Yokomoto carded a 69.

Wilsons golfing together: Siblings Gabriel, 17, and Amanda Wilson, 15, will compete in the 24th Annual Polo Golf Junior Classic Nov. 24-30 at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

They earned exemptions as the top point scorers in Hawaii State Junior Golf Association's tournaments this year.

USPTA Hawaii names Kop Pro of the Year

The United States Professional Tennis Association Hawaii named Randy A. Kop 2002 USPTA Hawaii Division Pro of the Year yesterday.

Other winners were Dave Porter, College Coach of the Year; Erik Vervloet, Open Player of the Year; Max Pavon, Senior Player of the Year; Arnold Yuen, Community Service Award; Dave Temple, Facilities Manager; George Asato, Rookie of the Year and Mark Skillicorn, High School Coach of the Year.

Division II top performers

>> Petar Samac, Chaminade water polo: The senior diver from Zagreb, Croatia, scored the game-winning goal with 29 seconds left in overtime last Friday to help the Silverswords overcome Brigham Young-Hawaii 12-11 for the first time in four tries this year. Samac scored five goals in the win, which earned the Silverswords a spot in the Western Water Polo Association Playoffs. The teams will play again tonight for seeding, which will be selected Monday.

>> Chelsea Smith, Brigham Young-Hawaii cross country: Smith broke the school's record for a 6K race by 11 seconds and earned a spot in the NCAA Div. II national championships in two weeks in Ashland, Ohio, with a fourth-place finish in the regional last Saturday. Smith, a freshman, now owns two of the three fastest times in Seasider history.

>> Chun Yi Lin, Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball: The middle blocker from Pingtune, Taiwan, won her fourth Pacific West Conference Player of the Week award this season, hitting over .500 in two wins over Chaminade with just a single error while leading the team in blocks. She raised her hitting percentage to .469, which is the best mark in the conference.
