For the first time, prize money, totaling $7,000, will be given to the top finishers in the open and military divisions of the 2003 Great Aloha Run, says co-founder Carole Kai.

The 19th annual charity run/walk on Presidents Day, Feb. 17, is also offering participants a chance to win a Continental Airlines trip for two anywhere in the world the airline flies. Entrants just have to enter the XtraALOHA Program and collect pledges. More information can be obtained by checking off the XtraALOHA box on the race application form or calling 528-7388. Kai also encouraged interested participants to register early by Dec. 6 to get a Great Aloha Run T-shirt, emblazoned with the words "In Training."

Entry donation is $22, $15 for children 12 and under and for seniors 65 and over. Late-entry fees are higher. The final entry deadline is Jan. 17.

Presented by Carole Kai Charities Inc. and officially sponsored by Continental, the Great Aloha Run is offering prize money to the top three male and female finishers in the open and military divisions: $1,000 for first; $500 for second and $250 for third-place finishers. Bank of Hawaii and "Hawaii Stars" are sponsoring the cash prizes, Kai said.

Kai said more than 45 businesses and groups have registered for the 2003 Presidents 100 Club Division of the run as a way to get their employees involved in fitness training.

"We see people who haven't exercised in years get so excited and motivated because they're participating with their company that they turn their lives around, start exercising on a regular basis and improve their health dramatically. That's really what this event is all about," she said.

The 8.15-mile run starts at Aloha Tower and finishes at Aloha Stadium.
