A $1.5 million, five-year grant has been awarded to the University of Hawaii-Manoa and University of Washington Schools of Nursing to establish a Nursing Center for Research on Health Disparities.

The National Institute for Nursing Research grant is the largest federal research grant received by the UH School of Nursing & Dental Hygiene in its 70-year history.

Both schools will have a center focusing on research-based innovations to reduce health disparities among population groups.

The UH center, headed by professor Marilyn McCubbin, will concentrate on health disparities affecting Asian and Pacific Islander populations. Co-directors are professors Robert Anders, Jillian Inouye and Dianne Ishida.

Barbara Molina Kooker, interim dean of the UH School of Nursing, said the research center "will lead to improvements in health care for the people of Hawaii, who we are so privileged to serve."

McCubbin, who joined UH last year from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, does research on family resiliency in children's chronic and life-threatening illnesses, under grants from the National Institute for Nursing Research, the national Cancer Institute, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and private foundations.

Two pilot studies at each institution will be funded annually under the new federal grant.

In the first year, UH-Manoa associate professor Chen-Yen Wang will study the use of traditional Chinese medicine and treatments by Chinese Americans with Type 2 diabetes.

Assistant Professor Charon Pierson will study equal access to long-term care among diverse ethnic groups in Hawaii.

Rosanne Harrigan, former dean of the UH School of Nursing & Dental Hygiene, established the original partnership between the UH and University of Washington programs.
