Outrigger wins 2 key
permits for 7-acre
Waikiki Beach project

Outrigger Properties' proposed $300 million Waikiki Beach Walk project cleared two major permit hurdles yesterday.

The City Council approved a special management area use permit and planned development resort permit for the planned revitalization of a 7-acre parcel in Waikiki bounded by Saratoga and Kalia roads, Lewers Street and Kalakaua Avenue.

The project -- which would result in the creation of a new hotel, the upgrade of five existing ones and the demolition of six others -- continued to draw praise from business, the visitor industry, construction industry and others.

Neighbors and police have previously raised concerns about traffic, parking and building heights. About the only objection during oral testimony yesterday came from some who questioned plans for a retail promenade.
