"LUMA" will turn Hawaii Theatre into a three-dimensional canvas, drawing from the worlds of circus, theater and electrical design to paint pictures with light.

'LUMA' technology turns on the lights

"LUMA: Theatre of Light" comes to the Hawaii Theatre Dec. 19 to 22, using new light technologies and several performance-art disciplines to transform a darkened theater into a surreal world of dancing fireflies, fireworks and iridescent trapeze artists. Shows will run 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19 to 21 and 4 p.m. Dec. 22.

"LUMA" is the creation of Marlin, who developed the program after standing in front of a Kilauea lava flow.

Ticket purchases made before Thanksgiving qualify for an early-bird discount of $8 off regular prices of $18, $28, $36 and $40, or $6 off the top price of $46. After Thanksgiving the $8 discount continues (except for top-price tickets) for 16 and under, military, seniors and Hawaii Theatre Center members. Groups of 10 or more receive a 10 percent discount. (Note that all tickets are subject to a $2 theater restoration fee.) To charge by phone, call 528-0506.

Film academy hosts filmmaking gathering

Mark Travis, author of "The Director's Journey," will give a free talk from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday on the world of independent filmmaking.

The talk will take place at the American Academy of Film and Television, 1174 Waimanu St., Suite A. Seating is limited to 25.

Genie Joseph will moderate the presentation, which will provide ample opportunity for questions. Call 949-8255.

Ola Pono anti-drug awards seek nominees

Friday is the deadline to submit nominations for the 2003 Ola Pono Awards honoring those working to create a drug-free Hawaii.

Nominees can be any group or individual who helps prevent substance abuse and violence through awareness, education or action.

Fill out a nomination form and in two pages or less answer the following questions: What does the nominee do to prevent substance abuse and violence? How has the community improved as a result of the nominee's efforts? How long has the nominee been providing service to the state of Hawaii?

Winners will be honored in February in celebration of Drug-Free Hawaii Awareness Month and will receive $1,000 to be donated to a charitable organization of their choice.

For information or to request a nomination form, call Drug-Free Hawaii at 800-545-1946 or visit HMSA's Web site at www.hmsa.com. Nominations may also be submitted online.

Laser Eye Center holds art contest

Friday is the deadline to submit artwork for the Laser Eye Center of Hawaii's first art contest, "The Art of Vision."

The contest is open to any Hawaii resident over age 15. The winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000 and will be featured in center promotions and advertisements. The second-place winner will receive $500, and the third-place winner, $250. The top 25 works will be displayed at the center and online at www.lasereyehawaii.com.

Pick up an entry form at the center at 1600 Kapiolani Blvd., Suite 105, or download it from the Web site. Call 946-6000.

Poets can enter HPU's annual award contest

Hawaii Pacific University is seeking entries for its third annual James M. Vaughan Award for Poetry. The award will recognize a Hawaii writer for an outstanding poem or group of poems. The winner will receive a $500 cash award, and his or her works will be featured in Hawai'i Pacific Review, HPU's annual literary magazine.

To participate, send three poems with a 100-line limit, with your name, address, phone number, e-mail and names of poems on a cover page (no name on the other pages), and a five-line biography to James M. Vaughan Award for Poetry, 1060 Bishop St. Suite 402, Honolulu 96813.

Participants must be residents of Hawaii. Submissions must be postmarked by Dec. 1, and manuscripts will not be returned. The winner will be announced in January. Call Patrice Wilson at 544-1108 or e-mail pwilson@hpu.edu.
