Have your plate lunch with
one scoop televised properties

Hawaii Homes & Land magazine has hit the airwaves. Homes & Land is a national company with independently owned franchise publications distributed free in local markets across the country. Now it is also a half-hour television show that airs at noon Monday through Friday on KHON-TV.

The show was launched by Lang Communications Inc., which publishes Homes & Land for Kauai and Maui as well as Estates & Land, featuring high-end real estate on the major islands.

President Holly Lang credits her mother, Toni Polancy, with the idea for the show and with doing the research needed to get the production together. Polancy is a former newspaper editor.

Other islands' publications have different owners: Oahu's is owned by Bob and JoJean Schieve, and Jane Sutton is the Big Island Homes & Land franchisee.

Lang is underwriting the cost of the air time at KHON as well as the cost of Maui-based Opticus Corp. It works out to $12,000 a month.

The show features panoramic still photos of homes, both interior and exterior shots, as well as undeveloped land for sale. Realtors pay to have listings included in the broadcast and rates vary by island. "Commercials are a whole separate deal," Lang said, "it's like our own little infomercial."

The show debuted Nov. 4. It fills a half-hour, but for now is two identical 15-minute segments back-to-back. That will change, Lang said.

"By January I want the production company to go to the outer islands to do live video and make it even more interesting."

"Jane on the Big Island wants the production company to come there and shoot her segments live, and she'll pay for that," Lang said. "If I want them to come to Kauai, I'll pay for that."

Lang only knows of two other markets where Homes & Land publishers produce TV shows, but believes the television element will eventually become a regular part of the magazine franchise.
