Sea Warriors send 3
into tennis semifinals


Three Hawaii Pacific tennis players reached the semifinals of the HPU Collegiate Invitationals yesterday at the Oahu Club.

Hawaii-Hilo's Richard Korneck joined Blaz Jurjec, Jan Tribler and Matey Pampulov in the semis.

The tournament featured players from HPU and Hilo. Brigham Young-Hawaii, Chaminade and Hawaii declined to participate in this year's event.

Jurjec beat teammate Stefan Pampulov in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-2. Tribler downed HPU's Matija Sulin 6-2, 6-2. Matey Pampulov stopped Hilo's Staffan Moritz 6-2, 6-3 and Korneck ousted teammate Karl Moritz 7-6, 6-4.

The Sea Warriors are ranked No. 5 in Division II. Jurjec (No. 23), Matey Pamuplov (26) and Tribler (41) are all ranked individually in the top 50.

Lady Mustangs into WAC finals

HOUSTON >> Top-seeded Southern Methodist advanced to tonight's Western Athletic Conference soccer championship match with a 2-1, double overtime victory over Fresno State last night at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.

First team All-WAC midfielder Jill Heinemann scored at 106:54 to give the Lady Mustangs (11-5-4) a chance to win their second consecutive league tournament title.

Texas-El Paso (16-2-0) scored four unanswered goals in the second half to demolish host Rice 6-2 and earn the opportunity to win its first WAC crown.

Holly Cohen scored three goals for the Miners and Miranda Cuthberson had two.

Rice beat Hawaii 2-0 in the first round on Thursday.
