Chef Sam Choy to be poster boy for city project

The city is using chef Sam Choy for its new campaign to demonstrate how to avoid being a "Pain in the Drain" by correctly disposing of fats, oils and grease, the most serious enemies of public sewer lines, according to city officials.

City bus riders will see Choy on posters listing proper grease disposal.

Star Markets is also contributing to the campaign by sponsoring radio public-service announcements and stuffing 50,000 shopping bags with fliers about grease disposal from mid-November through the end of the year.

Isle foundation searching for a family to assist

The Hale Ohana Foundation is searching for a family who needs housing and would like help finding work and possibly a career in real estate.

Interested families can write to the Hale Ohana Foundation, 320 Ward Ave., Suite 207. Disqualifying factors are criminal or drug abuse histories.

The Hale Ohana Foundation wants to raise at least $10,000 to help the family move into a home and provide it necessities. It also will sponsor a member of the family for a career in real estate. The foundation is asking for donations to be dropped off Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at the parking lot across the street from Sports Authority on Ward Avenue.

Aina Haina Library to celebrate its 40th

The public is invited to attend the 40th-anniversary celebration of Aina Haina Library at 9:45 a.m. Nov. 16.

The Rev. William Kaina will begin the celebration with a blessing, followed by a lion dance. At 11 a.m. magician Bradley Choy will perform. Refreshments will be served outside the library. To request a sign language interpreter, call the library five to seven days prior to the program at 377-2456.

He was also recognized for advocating a measure that shields victims and other witnesses from having to repeatedly provide testimony.

Car crash on Kauai kills 17-year-old boy

A 17-year-old boy died Tuesday after his car skidded off the road, slid down an embankment and overturned into a reservoir.

Police said the boy was driving north on Kainahola Road in Kapahi sometime before 8:45 p.m. and lost control of his car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Piggery fire results in deaths of several pigs

Fire broke out in a shed at a piggery behind Leeward Community College this morning and caused the death of several pigs in a neighboring shed, Capt. Kenison Tejada said.

Firefighters originally were called to a rubbish fire at 96-155 Waiawa Rd. about 7:20 a.m. They arrived to discover a burning shed. No one was injured, but several pigs in the next shed apparently died from the heavy smoke, Tejada said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

HPD checkpoints set for Veterans Day

Honolulu police will be conducting intoxicated-driver checkpoints this Veterans Day weekend. The checkpoints will be set up today through Tuesday.

So far this year, 57 people have died on Oahu roads from traffic collisions. Traffic investigators determined alcohol or drugs were factors in 14 of the deaths, while speed caused 22 deaths. There were 66 traffic deaths on Oahu at this time last year.

Police seek man, 34, wanted on 3 warrants

Honolulu police are asking for help finding Warren K. White, 34, who is wanted on one traffic and two domestic violence warrants.

Police said White, who has a previous weapons conviction, may be carrying a handgun and should be considered dangerous. White, also known as Warren Machado and Elsworth Paikai, also is wanted for questioning in auto theft cases in the Honolulu area.

White frequents the Makiki and Papakolea areas, police said. He is 5 feet 6, 145 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
