‘Honk’ is a hit at
Manoa Valley Theatre

KHNL newswoman Diane Ako celebrated her first wedding anniversary yesterday, and finds she's getting more hot under the collar due to a question she's often asked. No, she's not hapai. One man asking the question said his wife's entire beauty salon thinks Ako is preggers. She's not. Kids are in her plans, but maybe four or five years down the line. "Could it be the new studio cameras KHNL got three months ago?" she asks. For the record, Ako has weighed the same (110) since high school so please stop asking her if a child is on the way ...

SPEAKING of kids, "Honk," the "ugly duckling" story from Hans Christian Andersen set to music, is a bonafide hit at Manoa Valley Theatre. To single out any of the performers would be unfair to the others, especially since it's such a strong cast from top to bottom. Suffice it the say, director Karen Brilliande is the true star because she pulled all the elements together. I can't remember laughing out loud so much at a local production. Order those tickets now -- it isn't just for kids. There is lots of grown up humor ...

BRILLIANDE'S husband Ray Bumatai, has been named Grand Marshal of the Toys for Tots fund-raiser staged by Street Bikers United. HPD, which has announced it's dispensing with its Harley-Davidson fleet, was informed that the City, in a cost-cutting measure, wouldn't make available free police intersection traffic control. But Pacific Rim Cycle, which sells Indian motorcycles, stepped up and is paying for the police presence. They're hoping to roll out 3,000 motorcycles, with people helping to make the State's largest one-day toy drive at the Convention Center on Dec. 1 a success ...

Michiganders

IT'S time once again tomorrow for fans of both Michigan and Michigan State to show up at Players on University at 7 a.m. to see that football intrastate rivalry. Lots of Big 10 fans will be on hand to cheer for their team and jeer their opponents. And would it be ungracious for an Iowa boy to mention that his Iowa Hawkeyes handily beat the stuffing out of both Michigan schools this year? ...

THE GM of the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki for the past four years, Ted McAneeley, has switched Islands and is now G.M. of Golf Operations and Residential Services at the Mauna Kea Resort ... After 53 years of service at the Academy of Arts, Lithieia "Li" Hall retired and was given a vacation at the Lodge at Koele on Lanai. And now that she has time on her hands, Li plans to take up golf as well as tennis, which she's been playing for over half a century ...

Local angle film doings

CHECK local listings, but there are seven showings of Kenneth Martinez Burgmaier's film, "Kiho Alu-Keola Beamer," featuring Beamer's slack-key guitar artistry, beginning 5 p.m. today at the Blaisdell Center Pikake Room. It repeats Monday. ... And the world premiere of Stephanie Castillo's film about the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments in World War II, "An Untold Triumph," will be premiered Monday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Hawai'i International Film Festival exec Luella Costales knows something about the story since her dad, now 97, is the oldest living vet from the Regiments ...
