Irons within reach of world title

Kauai's Andy Irons finished tied for fifth yesterday at the Mundial Coca-Cola de Surf in Saquarema, Brazil.

The current world tour ratings leader increased his lead, but lost in the quarterfinals to eventual winner Taj Burrow.

Burrow beat Mick Fanning for the title.

Irons can secure the world title by reaching the finals of either of the upcoming events in Hawaii -- the Rip Curl Cup at Sunset Beach or the XBOX Pipeline Masters at Banzai Pipeline.

"Coming into Brazil I wanted to at least better a 17th (place finish) and I did that with a quarterfinal," Irons said.

"I'm on a flight tonight and am so psyched," he said, of heading home to Hawaii. "I can't wait. Haven't been back in like two and a half months, so it's going to be incredible. I'm so psyched for Sunset and Pipe."

Wahine place last in golf tournament

The Hawaii Wahine 17th, and last, at the Kent Youel Invitational at the Kapolei Golf Course.

Stanford's Kim Rowton won the individual title with a final round 71 (215 total).
