Theater blitz continues
on island’s stages

NO sooner am I back in town from a long, theater-filled vacation, than I find that Hawaii's something-for-everybody stages are themselves being filled. Opening last night was "Honk!", an award winning musical in Britain, at Manoa Valley Theatre. It's based on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling," and stars the anything-but-ugly Katie Doyle as the mother duck ... Also opening last night was "K2" by Patrick Meyers, a production of The Actors' Group at Windward Community College ... Many more theater pieces are in the works: "The Conversion of Ka'ahumanu" opens Nov. 7 at Kumu Kahua Theatre; Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman" opens Nov. 8 at Hawaii Pacific University Theatre; Lanikai Mortgage Players will present their latest melodrama, "Wedlockout," opening Nov. 8 at the Lanikai Community Center; "Smokey Joe's Cafe," a hit at Manoa Valley Theatre a few months ago, is being reprised beginning Nov. 14 at Army Community Theatre. Former Miss Hawaii Traci Toguchi, who stars in the show, will give a preview with other cast members on the Perry & Price Hanohano Room show ...

Jewish tradition

THE stages on the Windward side of the island are steeped in Jewish tradition this month. "The Diary of Anne Frank" plays at the Ronald E. Bright Theatre, produced by the Castle Performing Arts Center Nov. 9-17 ... Then on Nov. 21, Windward Community College opens its first musical, "Fiddler on the Roof," directed by Bright ...

WONDER how "Joe Rockstar," Steve Hotti, feels about his disk jockey wife, Hudson of STAR 101.9, grabbing Tommy Lee's pants. To explain: Hudson's show is holding a trade up for bigger and better items, beginning with a $20 bikini. It worked up to a package consisting of a limo ride, three night stay in Waikiki, dinner at Sistina, an Ocean Club certificate, helicopter ride and Atlantis sub ride, worth a total of $2,400. Rocker Lee paid a surprise visit to Hudson and Scotty B., trading in his pants, which he said were "priceless." So who should bid on and win the pants? Why, Hudson, of course. She put up a canary yellow Chanel jacket (size 6) plus a 14K gold Hugs and Kisses bracelet, worth $3,000, the item currently up for bid ...

Birthday bash

VISITORS to the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort who visit the Moana Terrace on Thursday evenings, usually find themselves sprinkled among kamaaina there to listen to Auntie Genoa Keawe and her unforgettable falsetto style which she performs on Thursdays only. Tonight's show will be especially crowded, you can bet, as Auntie Genoa will be celebrating her 82nd birthday ...

THE "Iron Chef," Masaharu Morimoto, spends the bulk of his time in the kitchen, right? Not if he's on the Big Island. The Iron Chef is hosting the Big Island Cook-Off featuring Hawaii's Culinary Stars and Food & Wine magazine's 2002 Best New Chefs in America. But the chef will be trying both his irons and woods at the T&L Golf Big Island Shoot Out tomorrow at Waikoloa Kings Course and on Saturday will tackle the Mauna Lani Resort's North Course. Paired with Morimoto tomorrow is Hawaii's own chef, Sam Choy ...
