Big, shifting surf leads to 36 rescues off Maui

Lifeguards rescued 36 windsurfers and kite-boarders off Maui's north shore yesterday as waves between 10 and 15 feet broke in unusual locations, catching riders off guard.

"The waves were really shifting and almost out of control," said county aquatics assistant chief Archie Kalepa. He said waves were breaking anywhere from 1/2 mile to a mile from shore.

Kalepa said ocean safety officers used three personal watercraft to rescue people from Kahului to Spreckelsville. He said there were no injuries, but a lot of broken windsurfing and kite-boarding equipment and grateful survivors.

"They had fear written all over their faces," he said.

Kalepa said only professionals should have been out yesterday.

That sentiment was echoed by Ocean Safety officials on Oahu yesterday who warned inexperienced surfers to stay out of the water along the north and west shores.

There were reports of debris washing up on Kamehameha Highway between Rocky Point and Sunset Beach Elementary, said Oahu Civil Defense officials, but there were no reports of rescues.

The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory yesterday predicting waves of 15 to 20 feet overnight.

TV station apologizes for debate timing goof

Hawaii Public Television apologized to Democrat Mazie Hirono for not letting her have the final word in last week's live gubernatorial debate, and said yesterday it was canceling all planned rebroadcasts, including a national airing on C-SPAN.

Republican Linda Lingle's campaign said the debate should air just as viewers who tuned in Friday saw it, mistakes and all.

Hawaii Public Television president and chief executive officer Mike McCartney, in a statement issued yesterday, blamed a timing goof that resulted in Lingle both opening and closing the broadcast.

McCartney's statement said editing the debate wasn't possible. Hawaii Public Television also is removing the debate from its Web site.
