Diwali: The Festival of Lights

Renowned classical Indian dancer Jyoti Rout headlines a cultural program of song and dance called "Diwali: The Festival of Lights," which also includes a special vegetarian dinner. It is scheduled for 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach Park. Tickets can be bought for $4 less than the door price if purchased before Halloween: $18 for adults and $10 for students. Sponsored by the Lotus Cultural Organization, tickets can be purchased by calling 395-7914, 988-9677, 236-2339 or 623-3670.

The return of Goldfinger

Popular SoCal punk-pop band Goldfinger returns to Hawaii Wednesday night at World Cafe. John Feldmann and the guys are touring in support of their new album "Open Your Eyes." Local band HolnDaWall will start the all-ages show at 7 p.m. Tickets are $17.50 and available at the usual outlets. Call 947-3663 for more info.

Kimono dress-up

The University High School kimono class is offering keiki an opportunity to play dress up, Japanese-style for picture taking, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 9 and 16 at the high school.

The session is for girls ages 3 to 7 and 5-year-old boys. Bring your own camera.

Got haiku?

The Hawaii Education Association is hosting the 25th annual International Haiku Writing Contest, with three categories: "Season Word," "Hawaii Word" and "Humorous."

The contest is open to the public, with a fee of $1 for each entry. For a copy of the rules, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: HEA International Haiku Contest, 1649 Kalakaua Ave., Honolulu 96826. Deadline for entries is Nov. 15.

HEA has published "Na Pua 'Oli, Puke 'Umi Kumalua," an anthology of winning haiku form its most recent international and student contests.

Any kings out there?

The King Kamehameha Celebration Commission is already searching for royalty for the June 2003 King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade.

Apply for pa'u marshal, queen, princesses, unit attendants and escorts, marching bands, floral floats, decorated vehicles or to portray King Kamehameha.

Volunteers are also needed to help with the parade and the Folklife Festival that follows. For information or applications, call 586-0333.
