FRESNO, Calif. >> This was the kind of game Tim Chang supposedly couldn't win -- that Hawaii couldn't win.

Eastern Illinois at home? Easy.

Texas-El Paso on the road? It was ugly, but with help from the defense and special teams, yeah.

Nevada, Tulsa -- both at the friendly confines of Aloha Stadium? Duck soup.

But at Fresno State, on national television?

Even though the Bulldogs have struggled mightily this fall, they were still an ominous obstacle for a quarterback whose doubters remained poised to pounce despite his steady improvement.

Chang, UH's career passing yardage leader as a sophomore, could throw for a thousand miles and a hundred wins against the bottom feeders. It still wouldn't matter to some.

He wouldn't reach Nick Rolovich, Dan Robinson or Garrett Gabriel status until he beat a name-brand opponent.

On Saturday, Chang, whose only previous road victory was in a poor performance at UTEP, did them all one better -- he beat a UH rival on the road, with a fourth-quarter comeback.

"This is a huge win for our program, because we haven't won a big game on the road," Hawaii coach June Jones said. "I think this kind of turns the corner for us, and shows we are headed in the right direction.

"Timmy Chang was marvelous. He did what big-time quarterbacks do."

Chang wasn't exactly Joe Cool the whole way. He needed some help to remain calm.

"We had to settle him down on that last drive," said Britton Komine, who battled past the physical Bryce McGill at the line of scrimmage and caught the game-winning 13-yard touchdown pass with 2:55 left. "Timmy was too excited. He wanted to do it all on one play. We had to tell him to focus one play at a time."

Chang got hit and hit hard -- something that he has rarely experienced, now because of UH's usually outstanding offensive line and before at St. Louis School where the Crusaders dominated.

Saturday, though, it was different. Chang was far from untouchable and was sacked three times. But he got back up each time and rallied the offense.

"Timmy Chang stayed in the pocket and delivered balls," linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa said.

Those who doubted Chang's intestinal fortitude now have reason to re-think.

"We talk about things to have when you are down, and one of them is courage," Chang said. "When you are down 21-9 in the fourth quarter, you really don't know what to do. You just try to put in a full effort, and maybe you can come up with a big win."

This was the first time Chang played against Fresno State. He was injured in 2000 (concussion) and 2001 (wrist ligaments).

"He got stronger as the game went on," Bulldogs coach Pat Hill said. "The intensity level of that game was high and we have a lot of young men who aren't used to playing at that level."

Chang and the rest of the Warriors showed they were ready for it.

UH's career passing leader is now 10-10 as a starting quarterback. Saturday against San Jose State he has the chance to add the title "winning career record" to "school career passing yardage leader." If he does, Hawaii is guaranteed a winning season and a bowl game invitation.
