Reyes, Wilton get teams
for Hawaii’s ‘block party’

The Hawaii men's volleyball team will begin defending its championship with an intersquad scrimmage scheduled for tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Assistant coaches Aaron Wilton and Tino Reyes will coach the teams.

Wilton will have senior Costas Theocharidis playing for him, helped out by Jose Delgado and setter Daniel Rasay. Also on the team are Joshua Stanheiser, Ryan Woodward and Jake Muise as well as incoming freshmen Pedro Azenha and Matt Bender.

Reyes will counter with setter Kimo Tuyay, outside hitter Tony Ching and middle blocker Delano Thomas. Joining them will be senior Eyal Zimet, Arri Jeschke and newcomers Eric Kalima, Matt Motter and Dio Dante.

XTERRA Championship set for Sunday on Maui

The 7th annual Nissan Xterra World Championship will be run Sunday on Maui's South Shore.

The XTERRA Championship is the culmination of a worldwide series of races (43 in all) held in Australia, Japan, Saipan, Germany, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and the United States.

The Maui course, considered XTERRA's most demanding, consists of a 1.5-kilometer roughwater swim at Wailea Beach, a grueling 30-kilometer mountain bike on the slopes of Haleakala, and an 11-kilometer trail run from Makena to Wailea.

It is a "winner take all" race with one of the richest pro purses in multisport at $105,000.

Top performers

Kahala Kabalis, Chaminade volleyball: The sophomore from Hilo has emerged as one of the PacWest's most dangerious hitters, pounding down 27 kills on a league-high 81 attempts against Western New Mexico last week to earn the conference's player of the week award. She is fourth in the conference in kills for the second-place Silverswords.

Adrienn Hegedus, Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis: Hegedus beat top-seeded Zsofia Golopencza of Armstrong Atlantic State to claim the NCAA II singles title last week and led Radtka Soltova of Broward in the semifinals of the Small College Super Bowl before retiring because of BYUH's policy against playing on Sundays.
