Star-Bulletin staff

Kalihi-Palama Health Center has received a $16,300 grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation which May Akamine, the center's executive director, said "comes at a crucial time."

She said the demand for health care for disadvantaged residents "continues to stretch the boundaries of the nonprofit safety net."

The center, established in 1975, is a Federally Qualified Community Health Center with the goals of providing 100 percent access to health care and eliminating health disparities.
