Quest for league
and state volleyball
titles begin Friday

The Oahu Interscholastic Association volleyball playoffs open Friday with 24 teams chasing the league championships and berths in next month's state tournament.

The league's boys and girls varsity tournaments begin with first-round matches on Friday and then on Saturday.

The boys tournament will be held at McKinley through the semifinals, which is set for Oct. 30. The first three rounds of the girls tournament will be held at Radford.

The championship matches are Nov. 7 at the Stan Sheriff Center. (See complete OIA playoff schedule in Scoreboard.)

Defending boys champion Pearl City is again the top seed from the OIA West. The Chargers girls team stormed through the division to finish 10-0 in the regular season.

Castle and Kalaheo finished tied at 8-1 in the OIA East boys standings, but the Knights own the division's top seed due to their victory over the Mustangs last week.

Kalani captured the OIA East girls title with wins over Moanalua and Kaimuki last week. Defending OIA girls champ Kahuku finished third in the East.

Saturday's quarterfinal winners earn berths into the state tournament.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu is also into the second half of its season.

The Kamehameha girls and Iolani boys secured state tournament berths by winning the league's first-round titles.

Fresh start in BIIF: After winning the Big Island Interscholastic Federation's football championship last fall, Waiakea stumbled this season to finish 1-6 and last in the league standings.

But the Warriors' hopes of returning to the state tournament are still alive thanks to the league's playoff format.

All eight BIIF teams are in the postseason tournament, which opens with two games Friday and two more on Saturday.

Hilo hosts Kohala and Keeau travels to Konawaena at 7 p.m. on Friday. Honokaa faces Hawaii Prep at 2 p.m. in Kamuela on Saturday and Waiakea takes on top-seeded Kealakehe at 7 p.m. in Kailua-Kona.

Kealakehe finished the regular season 6-1 and clinched the top spot with its 20-14 win over second-place Hilo (6-1) last Saturday.

The semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 2 with the championship game to be held Nov. 9.

Rankings watch: Kamehameha, the only undefeated team in the state, moved up nine spots in the Student Sports Fab 50 football rankings after its 28-0 win over Iolani last week.

The Warriors (8-0 overall) check in at No. 30 in this week's national poll and are ranked sixth in the West Region.

Prep Heisman nominees: Thirty-four Hawaii high schoolers have been nominated for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.

Schools are invited to nominate male and female senior student-athletes who have at least a B average in school and participate in community service.

State finalists will be named on Friday. State winners will be announced Nov. 4. The 102 state winners will be eligible to receive regional awards and the national award to be presented Dec. 13.
