Seaweed is star
of Saturday fest

[MORSELS]

Celebrate seaweed at Saturday's Kakaako Ocean Fest, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kakaako Gateway Park.

Along with the entertainment, games, make-and-take crafts and food booths, there will be a display of seaweed and a demonstration by Isabella Abbott of cooking with various types of seaweed.

Abbot is a retired professor of botany at the University of Hawaii-Manoa who has made an extensive study of algae in Hawaiian waters. Among the dishes she'll demonstrate are stuffed konbu and ahi poke.

Also, chef Bill Bruhl of Ryan's Bar & Grill will demonstrate cooking with fish donated by the Hawaii Longline Association.

Seaweed from Uwajima Fisheries in Kailua-Kona will be sold, along with taro, breadfruit and poi.

Admission is free; fees for some of the activities will benefit the Hawaii Children's Discovery Center. Call 524-6441, ext. 29.
