Mustangs deal Wahine
second straight loss

From staff and wire reports

DALLAS >> The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine soccer team was blanked 4-0 by Southern Methodist yesterday before 313 fans at Westcott Field.

The Mustangs (8-4-3, 4-0-1 Western Athletic Conference) dealt the Wahine (5-7-3, 2-2-0) their second consecutive conference loss.

Both teams had good scoring chances in the first 30 minutes, but fine play by SMU goalkeeper Erin McLeod and UH's Mahie Atay kept the nets empty.

McLeod deflected a cross from Natasha Kai intended for a wide-open Arlene Devitt just past the UH junior striker five minutes into the match. Atay made a save on Erin MacCallum's shot from the top of the box at 14 minutes with a sprawling dive 15 yards off the line, then got help from Natalie Groenewoud, who headed MacCullum's second attempt clear of the empty net.

Devitt got a pretty pass from Kai as the clock approached 37 minutes, but her shot from 16 yards sailed wide right.

SMU got the first break when Amanda Jordan pounced on a ball about 25 yards away from the goal to the left of the penalty box that had deflected off a UH defender. Her shot found the right corner of the net just under the cross bar at 40:27.

"The goal was a fluke. She intended to cross the ball, not shoot. Mahie was playing for a cross, but the ball just swerved into the corner," said UH coach Pinsoom Tenzing.

SMU scored three times in the second half to put the match away.

"We lost today, but I'm so proud of the kids. They played right to the very end and they played like it was 0-0," said Tenzing.

"We missed two one-on-one chances early in the game and those are game breakers for any program. We got beat, but it doesn't seem like a loss, at least to me. It isn't like Rice last week when we won, but felt like we lost. We're 2-2 in the WAC and we lost against the two best teams, but we will see them again."

Hawaii plays a nonconference match against Texas Christian today and is scheduled to return home tomorrow.

Note: Erin Sayegusa (Kaiser) scored her second goal of the match at 93:34 as Fresno State edged host Boise State 4-3 in overtime yesterday.
