Oahu truck company faces tax indictment

An Oahu grand jury has indicted a commercial trucking company for failure to file tax returns from 1996 to 2000.

Commercial Truck & Lift Center Inc. was charged Oct. 9 with four counts of failing to file annual general excise tax returns. Vice President Craig K.H. Lee was also indicted with four counts as the person responsible for filing the company's returns.

If convicted, Lee faces fines of no more than $25,000 or imprisonment of no more than a year for each count. The corporation faces fines of no more than $100,000 per count.

Candlelight vigil set to honor abuse victims

The YWCA of Oahu is holding a candlelight vigil Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Kawaiaha'o Church to honor those who have been killed by domestic violence.

The vigil is free and open to the public. Attendees may bring flowers to remember their loved ones. Refreshments and a resource fair will precede the vigil in Kawaiaha'o Hall from 5 to 5:45 p.m.

Hanauma Bay hosts coral reef discussion

Richard Grigg, internationally known University of Hawaii oceanographer, will discuss the history of the Hawaiian Archipelago and its coral reefs at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at the Hanauma Bay Education Center.

A noted surfer and researcher on the ecology and paleoceanography of reef-building corals, Grigg will show how islands and reefs form, thrive and eventually drown.

The event is hosted by the Hanauma Bay Education Program.

Exhibits will be open in the center before and after the presentation, which is free and open to the public.

State's rare-species grants are available

Private landowners who want to conserve rare species on their land can apply for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Landowner Incentive Program grants.

The flexible program focuses on species that have a reasonable chance of benefiting from management actions on private lands, said Paul Conry, of the state Division of Forestry & Wildlife.

An earlier deadline for applications has been extended to Oct. 31.

Woman apparently drowns off Mokuleia

A 52-year-old woman apparently drowned while swimming off Mokuleia Beach, police said. Passers-by pulled the woman to shore about 10:45 a.m., and she was pronounced dead at Wahiawa General Hospital at 12:24 p.m., a police spokesman said.

Car hits Waipahu girl as she crosses street

A 9-year-old Waipahu girl was injured critically while crossing Farrington Highway about 6:45 p.m. Saturday, police said.

A 64-year-old Aiea man was turning left onto Farrington from Pupukahi Street when his white 1998 Toyota Tacoma pickup struck the girl, police said. The girl was taken to Queen's Medical Center; the man was not injured.

Police said weather, alcohol and speed did not appear to be factors in the accident but that the color of the girl's clothing and street lighting could have been factors.

Teen passenger hurt as car hits utility pole

A 13-year-old boy was injured when a sports car driven by his mother ran into a telephone pole at Farrington Highway and Auyong Homestead Road in Nanakuli about 4 p.m. Saturday, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada. Fire crews used the jaws of life to get the boy out of the car, he said.

The boy was airlifted from Waianae Comprehensive Health Center to Queen's Medical Center in serious condition, an ambulance spokeswoman said.

Boy dies after losing consciousness on boat

A 16-year-old boy died Saturday after he was found unconscious on a fishing boat about three miles off Barbers Point about noon, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Justin Acosta. The Coast Guard airlifted the boy to Kuakini Medical Center.

4 fallen poles disrupt Laie power and traffic

Morning traffic on Kamehameha Highway in Laie today was routed through the Polynesian Cultural Center parking lot as a repair crew worked to remove four utility poles that fell onto the highway last night.

A pole in front of the center fell about 9 p.m., dragging three other poles down after a guy wire broke, said Fred Kobashikawa, HECO spokesman. Power was knocked out for about 380 customers. Except for 10 customers, power was restored by 1 a.m., he said, and the remaining 10 should get their power back later today.

Man allegedly steals 41 pairs of jeans

A 37-year-old man was charged yesterday with second-degree theft on suspicion that he walked out of a store in Windward Mall with 41 pairs of jeans without paying for them.

Police said Aaron Ramelb of Mililani walked into the store about 2:45 p.m. Saturday, went straight for the men's wear department, stacked jeans into a bag and walked out. He was stopped outside the store and held until police arrived.

Police did not release the name of the store. Ramelb's bail is $12,000.

WAIKIKI

Suspect sought in Aston Waikiki robbery

Police are looking for a man who robbed the Aston Waikiki Sunset hotel on Paoakalani Avenue about 9 p.m. yesterday.

The front desk clerk said a man in his 20s walked in, showed what looked like a handgun strapped to his waist and demanded money. After receiving money, he ran away.
