Tomorrow is the deadline to register for "Hawai'i, the State of the Arts," a two-day conference at the Hawai'i Convention Center on Nov. 1 and 2.

The statewide conference, the first in more than 30 years, will bring together representatives from Hawaii's arts organizations, government, business and the community to speak, experience and stimulate awareness of the role and impact that culture and the arts play in our everyday lives.

"More than ever, the bridge to prosperity, compassion and peace is understanding of one another through our various artistic forms of expression," said Mona Abadir, conference and State Foundation on Culture and the Arts chairperson. "The sparks of inspiration can unite us to see and appreciate the universal value of the arts in Hawaii and of Hawaii to the world."

Speakers at the event, presented by the SFCA and the Hawai'i Consortium for the Arts, will include:

>> Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell, Dean Tisch School of the Arts, New York University

>> Evan Dobelle, University of Hawaii president

>> Walter Dods, chairman and CEO, First Hawaiian Bank

>> Pualani Kanahele, kumu hula and community leader from the Big Island

>> W.S. Merwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet

>> Graham Nash, recording artist, collector, fine arts printing and technology entrepreneur

>> Masaru "Pundy" Yokouchi, chairman of the board of directors, Maui Arts & Cultural Center

Topics will include arts education, community building in rural communities, cultural tourism, grants and fund development, positive alternatives for youth at risk, preserving cultural heritage, public art and revitalization in the community, public policy and advocacy, urban planning and architecture.

Registration for the two-day conference, running 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, is $100, and includes continental breakfast, lunch and refreshments each day. Validated parking is available for $3 per day.
