Jewelry made from semi-precious stones, Swarovski crystals and silver will be among the items available at the Alakea Street Fall Craft Fair going on today and tomorrow.

Crafts downtown

For all those wahine working downtown, too busy to hit weekend craft fairs, one is coming to you -- if you can walk a block or two.

The Alakea Street Fall Craft Fair runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and tomorrow at the corner of Alakea and Hotel streets.

Among items up for grabs will be Hawaiian quilts, cookies, handmade clothing, and jewelry by Wendee Ellen crafted from semiprecious stones, Swarovski crystals and unusual sterling silver and stone pendants from Bali, Turkey and Thailand.

The jewelry, from $30 to $220, flatter wearers with their harmonious color blends playing up skin and eye color.

Gems out of the wild

The Rainbow Collection is hosting "Gem Show 2002" tomorrow through Monday at its Ala Moana store.

Three international gem dealers will show off precious and semiprecious gems: Tim Roark will bring thousands of gems hand-picked from every continent; Liz McKenzie of Empress Abalone Pearl Co. in New Zealand will have rare pearls; and RW Osmond of Australia is bringing opals, emphasizing the sky-blue Boulder Opals of the Outback, worth up to $60,000.

Purchases will be wrapped in hand-woven bags created by the Weaving for Women project, started by a Burmese woman named Daisy Dwe at the Myanmar border.

A site known as "Three Pagoda Pass" and the neighboring town of Sang Khlaburi are home to more than 25,000 Myanmar refugees, many of them widows with children, no jobs, no homes and no food. Dwe teaches them to weave on makeshift looms made of bamboo and bicycle wheels.

The Rainbow Collection is open from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays.

Light up the town

Maybe you've seen them in clubs or at the recent Journey concert. Body Blinkers turn some of the spotlight back on those who wear these LED blinking multicolored lights.

Styles range from pendants to rings. The most popular is the magnetically applied earring, worn on clothing, nostrils or ears. The lights flash in one, two or even three colors at high speeds.

They run on watch batteries (included), which last about eight hours. Earrings and rings come with an extra set.

Body Blinkers will be available at the Food and New Product Show at the Blaisdell Center through Sunday, at Booth 333.

They normally sell for $5 to $6 each, but the price at the show will be two for $7 and three for $10.

Show hours are 5 to 10 p.m. today and Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $4; $3 for seniors, military and children. Call 945-3594.
