Remember "Checkers and Pogo," Professor Fun and Bob Sevey? KGMB goes back 50 years into its archives to capture Hawaiian television in its infancy in "KGMB 9: 50 Years in Hawaii."

The special airing tonight is a 1-1/2 hour, decade-by-decade trek from the '50s to the present. Back to host the special is former KGMB News director and anchor Sevey, often referred to as the "Walter Cronkite of Hawaii."

In Hawaii in 1952, the territory was still seven years away from statehood. And no TV. No TV, that is, until Dec. 1, when KGMB 9 became Hawaii's first station.

A tradition of local programming was born at the station, which offered the after-school children's program "Checkers and Pogo"; televised "Wrestling in Hawaii"; and captured the entertainment scene through "Island Music, Island Hearts"; and "Sunrise, The Kini Popo Show."

Included in the special are an array of program clips, personality profiles and interviews, plus glimpses of perennially popular KGMB comedy specials: "All in the Ohana" & "High School Daze," featuring comedian Andy Bumatai; and "Rap's Hawaii," which starred Rap Replinger).

Perhaps the best known of the specials is "The Hawaiian Moving Company," the local magazine-style show now in its 23rd year.
