Amritraj to visit Big Island


The 16th annual USTA Hawaii Pacific Section Tennis Weekend is slated for Oct. 26-27 at the Ohana Keauhou Beach Resort at Kailua-Kona on the Big Island.

The tennis weekend features clinics for juniors and adults, skills challenges, social play, a USTA membership appreciation booth and product demos and exhibitions.

Special on-court guests include Vijay Amritraj and Gundars Tilmanis.

Amritraj is best known for his years spent on the ATP Tour, including numerous appearances in Wimbledon and in the Davis Cup for India.

Tilmanis is an internationally recognized tennis coach, author and lecturer.

Hawaii tennis teams headed for nationals

Tennis teams from Waipahu and Honolulu will compete in the USA League Tennis Senior National Championships.

Waipahu is going to Palm Springs, Calif., this weekend to play in the 3.5 division, while Honolulu is headed to Tucson, Ariz., to play in the 4.0 division.

Waipahu team members are captain Clyde Miyasato, Roy Nashiro, Warren Asato, Alvin Kogachi, Clifton Yoza, Burrelle Ayau, Robert Alamillo, Roy Chinn, Dexter Kuwata and Stanley Chun.

Honolulu team members are captain Eugene Lee, Jerry, Akiyama, David Kam, Alan Kim, Lester Naito, Robert Nemechek, Calvin Oshita, George Yamanouchi, Brian Lee and Lon Okada.

Takata triumphs in Las Vegas judo

Taylor Takata of Wahiawa won the 60-kilogram weight class at the U.S. Judo Open in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Takata beat Dynell Pinder of New Jersey in the finals.

Takata is a member of the U.S. national judo team and he trains at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and he's ranked No. 1 in his class.

Seasiders move up to fourth place

Brigham Young-Hawaii moved up a notch to fourth place in the latest AVCA Division II women's volleyball poll.

The Seasiders defeated then No. 24 Hawaii Pacific in two matches last week to improve to 14-1.

The Seasiders received one first-place vote in the poll.

UH swimmers go against UOP

The Hawaii men's and women's swimming and diving teams compete in their first scoring match of the season Friday against University of the Pacific.

The meet starts at 6 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Both UOP teams won Big West titles last season, but both lost to California in openers.

In UH's first non-scoring match last week, the Senior Circuit, Nimrod Palma (200 butterfly and 500 freestyle), Peter Thew (100 backstroke), Tudor Ignat (100 and 200 breaststroke), Cheyne Bloch (50 and 100 freestyle), Michelle Vos (200 backstroke), and Stephanie Regucera (100 butterfly) were UH's individual winners.
