Gov. Cayetano honors 11 state employees

Eleven state employees were honored yesterday at the 31st annual governor's awards ceremony.

The 2002 governor's awards acknowledged employees in three categories: Manager of the Year, Employee of the Year and Team of the Year.

Maj. Charles J. Anthony, military public affairs and educational officer of the state Department of Defense, was selected Manager of the Year.

"He has consistently demonstrated professionalism of the highest caliber in every project he has undertaken. He has earned the respect and trust of Hawaii's news media and has also developed a noteworthy and highly proactive media presence from the smallest military public affairs office in the Pacific," Gov. Ben Cayetano said.

Anthony's accomplishments include work with the Hawaii Youth Challenge Academy, Office of Veterans Services, Korean War veterans, Hawaii National Guard and the Governor's Office.

Anthony also was recognized for his public affairs role in the Asian Development Bank Conference in May 2001 and handling inquiries from the public in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

School custodian Raymond Belaski of Manana Elementary School was selected Employee of the Year.

"Mr. Belaski innovates new ways to improve the 30-plus year-old school buildings and facilities especially during tight economic times," said Caye-tano, adding Belaski's positive attitude and strong work ethic help Manana students to learn.

The governor also acknowledged the work of the Dengue Response Team of the Maui District Health Office with the Team of the Year award.

"The nine-member team was immediately mobilized to successfully combat the recent dengue epidemic on Maui and worked to isolate it from spreading," Cayetano said.

The team facilitated laboratory work, door-to-door field canvassing, town meetings and news conferences.

Fingerprints help nab suspect in uke theft

Fingerprints found on window louvers helped police track down a suspect in the Sept. 8 theft of four ukuleles from Kaimuki Middle School.

Police recovered latent prints from the louvers that were removed during the burglary at the school's music room, and the prints matched those of an 18-year-old inmate at Oahu Community Correctional Center, police said.

He was arrested yesterday at the prison, where he was being held in a separate case.

2 suspects sought in parking lot break-in

Police and Navy investigators want help identifying two men who were involved in a car break-in at the USS Arizona Memorial parking lot on Oct. 4.

Police said the 8:20 a.m. break-in was recorded on videotape, which shows the two driving into the lot in a stolen white 1993 Dodge mini-van and parking next to a 2002 Ford Mustang convertible rented by a family from California.

The video then shows one man breaking into the convertible through a door and opening the trunk to take valuables.

He was described as in his 30s, about 6 feet tall, with a stocky build, dark hair, a mustache and a goatee. He was wearing a dark baseball cap, dark shorts, and a dark T-shirt with a shaka sign on the back.

No description is available for his accomplice, who drove the van with the license number "EVZ 174."

Freeway crash kills motorcycle rider, 27

A man died after he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a guardrail on Moanalua Freeway about 9 p.m. yesterday

Police said speed may be a factor in the accident in the Ewa-bound lanes of the freeway near Kaiser Moanalua Medical Center. The victim, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene.

While investigating the accident, police closed all Ewa-bound lanes of the freeway and rerouted traffic to the H-1 freeway airport viaduct via the Middle Street interchange.

Police want help finding James "Jimmy" Gaudet, who is being sought on a parole revocation warrant for previous convictions on sexual assault and burglary.

Gaudet's parole was revoked because he allegedly failed to report to his parole officer in August and moved from his parole address in Wahiawa.

As a convicted sex offender, Gaudet is required to notify and register his residence with law enforcement, police said. His parole terms are for life.

Police said Gaudet was last seen in Wahiawa and has told family members that he does not want to return to prison. Gaudet, 43, is 5 feet 10, 205 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes, a mustache and a tattoo on his left hand.

Police said Gaudet may be driving a brown 1985 AMC Jeep, license plate number "ERZ 120." Police say Gaudet could be in the Wahiawa, Waialua, or Haleiwa areas. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cellular phone.
