Michael Maata upset top-seeded and two-time champion Erik Sandblom 6-2, 6-2 yesterday at Punahou School to capture the crown at the 50th Annual Dillingham Championships.

The victory by Maata, a two-time All-American at Hawaii Pacific, avenged last year's loss to Sandblom in the finals of last year's tournament.

Other winners in Hawaii's oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament included women's singles champion Petra Gaspar, formerly the top-ranked Hungarian player in the world and doubles champions Polina Kravets and Silvia Ricote. The men's doubles final was declared "abandoned" due to rain with Matey Pampulov and Sasha Pirc leading Maata and Jan Axel Tribler 6-1, 4-2.

Irons advances to quarterfinals

Hanalei's Andy Irons controlled his fourth-round match with Nathan Hedge yesterday at the Billabong Pro Mundaka in Spain.

Irons, the Association of Surfing Professionals' ratings leader, opened with a 7.0 and then collected a 7.85 for a comfortable lead. Hedge came back, posting a 7.35, but still needed another ride worth 7.51 points.

Irons advanced to the quarterfinals and will face Flavio Padaratz, who defeated Oahu's Kalani Robb yesterday.

"I am stoked with that heat," Irons said. "I started off getting a good first wave and was on a roll from there. My board felt really good and I'm looking forward to the quarters."
