Brief, heavy showers
to continue tomorrow

Don't put away the umbrella just yet. The strong frontal system south of the island chain, which brought nearly three inches of rain on Oahu last night, will bring more brief but heavy showers through tomorrow on all islands.

The National Weather Service said the heaviest rainfall on Oahu was reported between 6:30 and 9:30 last night and moved to Molokai during the night and to Maui early this morning.

No serious injuries were reported but the torrential rain caused traffic havoc and minor flooding of a Waikele home, police said.

Police closed Kalanianaole Highway, between Kealahou Street in Hawaii Kai and Bell Street in Waimanalo, after rain washed rocks and debris down the cliffs at Makapuu Point. The highway is expected to be reopened later today.

Downed utility poles, caused not by the rain but by rusty cables that gave away, added to traffic woes this morning on Kamehameha Highway near Shark's Cove.

The highway was closed partially after a Verizon Hawaii utility pole fell across the roadway, dragging another pole down with it last night.

The utility line fell onto a van, causing minor injuries to the driver. Four others in van were not injured.

Firefighters pumped flood waters and cleared debris from 94-748B Lumiauau St. after rising water from a nearby canal and storm drain flooded the home.

The water in the backyard was knee deep, said Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada.
