Torres Jr. takes over
Kalani wrestling program


Former St. Louis wrestling coach Alfred Torres Jr. has accepted the same position at Kalani.

Torres has 18 years of coaching experience and has developed more than 50 ILH champions and 21 state champions.

Kalani will have tryouts for its team beginning Wednesday after school in the gym.

Uchima on NFCA scholar-athlete list

Hawaii right fielder Tracie Uchima was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Scholar-Athlete team yesterday.

Uchima got on the list because of her 3.85 grade point average in animal science. Joining her on the team were sophomore Justine Kahaku, senior Stacie Hirano and freshman Noelle Izumi. Hawaii's team GPA was 2.96 last year.

No. 18 Seasiders back at .500

The Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo team evened its record at 6-6 by downing conference rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 11-4 at Claremont, Calif., yesterday.

Vanja Kalabic scored the first three goals of the game to get the Seasiders out to a 7-1 lead. Kalabic finished with six goals.

The Seasiders played UCSanta Cruz later yesterday and will take on Redlands and Iona today.

Still time to sign up for Haleiwa triathlon

The Haleiwa triathlon is scheduled for Nov. 2 to benefit the Manu O ke Kai canoe club and costs $50.

The deadline to sign up is Oct. 26 with packet pickup Oct. 30. Entry forms can be picked up at 24-hour fitness.

Divsion II top performers

>> Vanja Kalabic, Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo: The sophomore outcored Chapman by himself last Monday, putting the ball in the net nine times and grabbing five staeals in the Seasiders' 15-8 win. Kalabic also added four goals vs. Loyola Marymount and two against UC-San Diego. Although those last two games were losses, the Seasiders remained No. 18 in the national poll while Chaminade dropped out.
