Arboretum hosts holiday classes


Health exec turns hobby into second career


Following are some classes being offered by Lyon Arboretum in time for the holidays. Register by calling 988-0456:

>> Chocolate and Caramel Delights!: Abby Langlas, one of Honolulu's premier pastry chefs, shows how to make Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch Cake, a favorite of customers at Honolulu Coffee Co., and homemade caramel apples for the approaching holidays, 9 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow (Course E-16).

>> "Holiday's Coming! Floral Arrangements": Award-winning flower arranger Anna Lise Vogel will demonstrate techniques for festive holiday arrangements, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 5. Cost: $10 (Course E-8).

>> Christmas Angels: Learn to make a holiday centerpiece from dried plant materials. Thanh Mougeot will guide you through creating an elegant angel, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 6. Cost of $20 includes supplies. (Course E-14).

>> Kadomatsu: Greet the New Year with this colorful and traditional Japanese good-luck symbol. Learn how to combine bamboo, rope and pine to create your own kadomatsu from precut materials provided in the class. Cost of supplies is included in the $20 class fee. 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 12 (Course E-15).

For children

>> Haunting Halloween Masks!: Tired of ordinary-looking Halloween costumes? Don't be a look-alike this year! Collect natural materials from the rain forest to make spooky Halloween creations. Use your imagination to make a mask or other festive crafts; 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 26. Class size is limited. For children in third through fifth grades. Cost: $20 (Course E-22).

>> Holiday Gifts to Make (and Take!): Learn to make handmade gifts for the whole family, including a personalized hiking stick for Mom or Dad, keepsake box, picture frame or cards. Paint flower pots for your aunties or tutu, or make kukui nut tops for your brothers or sisters; 9 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 14. Class size is limited. For children in second through fifth grade. The $25 fee includes supplies (Course E-23).
