The containership CSX Consumer cruised past Aloha Tower shortly before 8 a.m. today and docked at Sand Island soon after, hauling the first load of cargo to arrive in Hawaii since the islands won an exemption Oct. 5 from the West Coast dock lockout.

The 24,000-ton ship, which carries some 800 containers, started a much-needed chain of relief for supply-hungry Hawaii

Its arrival is the first of a series of Hawaii sailings by CSX and rival Matson Navigation Co. that began with the exemption a week ago and continued after this week's start of a court-ordered 80-day cooling-off period imposed on the shipping lines and the union.

The freight lines, represented by the Pacific Maritime Association, called the 10,500 West Coast dock workers represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union back to work late Wednesday.

Next to arrive will be Matson's Kauai from Seattle, due to reach Honolulu tomorrow morning. Another Matson ship, the Ewa, is due from Los Angeles early Sunday and the Matsonia, from Oakland, is due to arrive later Sunday.

Monday morning will see the arrival of the CSX Navigator, from Oakland. Matson's Chief Gadao is due to arrive from Los Angeles early Tuesday. The CSX Reliance is schedule to arrive late Thursday or early Friday direct from Tacoma.

The shipping companies have posted schedules for later dates but have cautioned that the huge backlog of cargo that built up during the 11 days of stoppage is creating a demand for labor that could cause some later delays.

For now, they say, they are happy their ships are moving.
