Goodwill in Kaimuki

Goodwill Industries of Hawaii opens its new Kaimuki store at 3638 Waialae Ave. tomorrow with a blessing at 8:45 a.m. Prize giveaways and entertainment continue until 9 p.m.

Parking will be available at Liliuokalani Elementary.

Since 1959, Goodwill has provided employment and support services for people with barriers to employment, such as public assistance dependence, lack of education/work experience, disabilities, etc.

Last year, Goodwill added job training in high-demand occupations: certified nursing assistants, para-professional human service workers and A+ certified computer repair technicians.

Protect the water

Answer a 10-item questionnaire on water and you'll be eligible for prizes from Hawaiian Airlines, Ala Moana Hotel, Dave & Busters, McDonald's, KFC, Zippy's, Rainbow Photo Lab and Polynesian Cultural Center.

The Water Quality Contest is sponsored by the City and County of Honolulu and Protect the Planet, a youth-focused group aiming to make caring for the planet a part of everyday life.

Questions test knowledge of pollution-causing practices such as allowing sediment from construction sites, pet wastes, excess fertilizers and pesticides to enter the water supply.

For example, true or false: The best way to get rid of excess grease from cooking is to pour it down the kitchen sink. (The answer is "false.")

Contest forms are available at Satellite City Halls, parks, the Honolulu Zoo and online at www.cleanwaterhonolulu.com.

Submit the form by mail or online by Oct. 31.

Changing your diet can change your life

Rebecca Woodland-Hawley misses nothing about her old diet. "It was the garbage-disposal diet -- anything and everything, in whatever quantities available."

Her husband lived on gourmet ice cream and pizza. "His idea of a green vegetable was mint chocolate chip ice cream."

Eventually their bodies forced a change in eating habits. Six year ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer; a year later his high-fat diet manifested itself in heart disease.

After a lumpectomy, Woodland-Hawley struggled with the healing process until a naturopath prescribed a diet overhaul, and she went vegan pretty much overnight. "I was ready to try anything."

She saw results in 24 hours, from improved breathing and sleeping to better skin. She knows her results were unusual, but they were dramatic enough that her husband made the switch away from meat and dairy, too. Both have restored their good health, Woodland-Hawley said.

It did take her awhile to learn to make vegan foods palatable, but having been cooking since age 14, she worked at it, eventually turning out a 200-recipe collection, "The Blonde Vegetarian." The catchy name, she said, was intended to keep her cookbook from languishing in the health-foods section.

She'll sell and sign the cookbook, plus demonstrate dishes and share samples at the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii's October lecture, 7 p.m. Saturday at McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach Park. The event is free, but donations are accepted. Call 944-VEGI.

Cooking classes

Chocolate and Caramel Delights: Pastry chef Abby Langlas will demonstrate how to make a Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch Cake and caramel apples, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 12 at Lyon Arboretum. Cost is $20. Call 988-0456.
