WAILUKU >> Upcountry Maui landowners have up to 60 days from today to add their names to a list for water meters.

Maui water director David Craddick said the Upcountry area has enough of a supply to provide about 500 more residential water meters.

There are 572 applicants on a priority list dating as far back as 1977, according to the county water department.

Maui water officials said landowners, who are not on the list but have spent funds relying on official assurances before Nov. 2, 1994, shall be allowed 60 days to pay for or reserve an allocation for service.

The priority waiting list was created after landowners in some areas were denied water service because there was not enough water.

Some landowners have been denied service since 1977 on the upper and lower Kula water systems and since 1993 on the Makawao water system.

The Upcountry area includes Pukalani, Makawao, Haiku, Kula, Haliimaile, Keokea, Olinda, Waiohuli, Pulehu, Ulupalakua and Kanaio.

Officials said landowners on the priority list who are unable to fulfill requirements for water service or who refuse water service shall be removed from the list and have to reapply to be put back on the list.

A water meter rule along with the priority list is available at the Maui water department's Web site at www.mauiwater.org or by calling 270-7835.
