Uke CD gives good
sounds for good cause

LAST WEEKEND'S "The Art of Solo Ukulele" concert at UH-Manoa provided a great opportunity to hear the versatility of an instrument that first arrived on these shores way back in 1879. Benny Chong, Gordon Mark, Jake Shimabukuro and Byron Yasui had performed together twice earlier this year (once at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and on television as part of Hawaii Public Television's "Na Mele O Hawaii" program) before Saturday and Sunday's concerts.

If you missed out on these talented performers performing live, pick up a copy of "The Art of Solo Ukulele" CD that's been released by the Honolulu Academy of Arts in conjunction with the National Organization for Traditional Artists Exchange. Produced by J.W. Junker, who also originated the "Na Mele" show, the album provides a lasting memory of the popular concert series, along with helping to raise funds for the Academy. "The Art of Solo Ukulele" CD is currently available on Oahu at the Academy's gift shop along with Bestsellers, Bookends, Hula Supply Center and Native Books for just $15 ...

DON'T FORGET ABOUT the "Great Diamond Head Beerfest," taking place from 6 to 9:30 p.m. tomorrow under the stars at the Waikiki Shell. Ticket prices are a bit steep ($22 presale, $28 at the door), but I'm sure I'll get my money's worth, tasting as many of the over 100 different brews being served that night as I can!

Along with offerings from the Portland Brewing Company, Anchor Steam and Boston Beers, I'm looking forward to tasting local brews from Aloha Brewery, Brew Moon and the Kona Brewing Company, while grinding on pupus from Gordon Biersch, Pipeline Cafe and Ryan's Grill. The Ernie Provencher Quartet, Dita Holifield and Ellsworth Simeona will also perform during the evening. Call 526-4400 to order tickets by phone ...

AFTER TWO STINTS at the China Plaza Restaurant earlier this year, the Architechs are moving their "Sweet & Sour" party to Pipeline Cafe starting Saturday night. Every other week, DJs Delve, Mixmaster B and XL will kick things off at 10 p.m. for the 18-and-over crowd.

First Pipeline brought back rock music with their Thursday nights, then they brought in a quality electronica act with LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad last month, and now "Sweet & Sour" drops in. Gotta appreciate the effort on Pipeline's part to bring more diversity to the club ...
