Long before MTV News had Serena Altschul, John Norris and Iann Robinson, there was Kurt Loder. The former Rolling Stone contributing editor arrived at MTV back in 1988 to give some legit journalistic heft to the network. At 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki, Loder will speak to the Hawaii Advertising Federation about "Business with a Beat: The Rise and Rise of MTV." The popular 25-year-old singer/songwriter Christopher Carrabba, a k a Dashboard Confessional, makes his Honolulu debut Nov. 5 at World Cafe. Carrabba won over punk-rock audiences with intimate, acoustic-based songs off his two albums, "The Swiss Army Romance" and "The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most." Tickets go on sale Saturday at the usual ticket outlets. Call 947-3633 for information.

Rice is nice

The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii pays tribute to that most essential carbohydrate -- rice -- at a Celebrate Rice Festival, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Besides taking in the rice-related merchandise and crafts, partake of these events:

The Musubi Man: Honolulu Theatre for Youth presents this localized version of the "Gingerbread Man." Tickets are $6 ($4 children) in advance; $2 more at the door.

Musubi Factory: Make your own musubi for $2 (free with "Musubi Man" ticket).

Rice Wisdom: A presentation and tasting of different types of rice, with Joan Namkoong, author of "Go Home, Cook Rice."

The cultural center is at 2454 S. Beretania St. Call 945-7633.

Cooking with coffee

The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival is seeking entries for:

Recipe contest: Categories include entrée, dessert and beverage for amateur cooks. Professionals may enter in the entrée division only. Children may compete in the dessert category. Recipes must include Kona coffee. Grand prize is a $250 KTA Super Store gift certificate. Dishes will be judged Nov. 2 at Keauhou Shopping Center. Call (808) 322-3928 for entry forms.

Label & Web site Competition: Prizes totaling $2,300 are offered to farmers, designers and writers for packaging and Web sites that market specific Kona coffee products. Deadline is Oct. 15. Entries will be displayed Nov. 3 to 5 at Keauhou Shopping Center and Nov. 6 to 7 at Ohana Keauhou Beach Resort. Judging will be Nov. 7. The Kona Coffee festival runs Nov. 1 to 10.

Cooking classes

Vegetarian cooking: Learn to make tofu lasagne, Cajun coleslaw and rosemary yams, 2 p.m. Saturday at Down to Earth Lifestyle Center. Free. Call 949-0298.
