Kennelly better than Abubo
on first day of ASP Roxy Pro

Kauai's Keala Kennelly won her first-round heat over Megan Abubo and Lisa Andersen yesterday in the Roxy Pro France women's surf contest at Hossegor.

Kennelly and Oahu's Abubo advanced to the third round of the Association of Surfing Professionals Word Championship Tour event, while Andersen moved to the second round.

Kennelly, who won her favorite event in Tahiti earlier this year, made the most of inconsistent conditions to pick off the most waves, including an 8.0 to ultimately win the best single wave count between herself and Abubo.

"In the beginning I was thinking there were going to be some more sets," explained Kennelly. "After about 10 minutes I realized I better just catch anything and was chasing waves back and forth, and just got lucky to get that 8.0 at the end."

Kauai's Rochelle Ballard, who placed second in her heat to reigning four-time world champion Layne Beachley, also moved to round three.

ASP men's ratings leader Andy Irons of Kauai and fellow Hawaii surfers Kalani Robb and Shane Dorian are preparing for upcoming first-round heats in the Quiksilver Pro France at Hossegor.

Beachley, who amassed the best single and combined two-wave total of the first round with a 9.5 and tally of 18-points, was in commanding form against Ballard and Amee Donohoe.

"I couldn't have asked for a better heat," admitted Beachley. "It wasn't working for me, but seemed to then. It was just a matter of finding the right waves and doing five turns to the beach, and fortunately I got the right ones and felt really confident."

Lyau, Casey-Pang win Komen race

Jonathan Lyau beat Clint Izuka-Sheele by 51 seconds and Mina Casey-Pang beat Jenna Yancey by 19 to win the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Sunday at Kapiolani Park.

The 5K run attracted approximately 5,000 athletes and raised funds for the fight against breast cancer. Lyau finished the race in 15:42 and Casey-Pang crossed the line in 19:20.

Yoko Pepera of Tulsa, Okla., was the top survivor finisher of the 1 mile walk, coming in at 7:53, followed by Charlotte Lee of Waipahu at 9:37 and Marcia Titcomb of Honolulu at 10:33.

Schnacks fast in Japan: At Iwate-Ken, Japan, 39-year-old twin sisters Cynthia and Carolyn Schnack of Hawaii both finished in the top five of the Ichiroseki half marathon yesterday.

Cynthia Schnack finished 6:17 behind women's winner Atsuko Sugawara, who completed it in 1:17:15. Carolyn Schnack was three minutes behind her sister, taking fourth with a time of 1:26:29.

David Kariuki of Kenya won the men's race in 1:03:41.
