Piano concert offers dinner


Concertgoers headed to pianist Jim Brickman's performance Oct. 12 can make a night of it, pairing pre- and post-concert dining with the music.

Hawaii Theatre, celebrating its 80th anniversary, is offering a $125 package of events:

>> Dinner begins at 5 p.m. at Kapono's in the Aloha Tower Marketplace, with food stations featuring sashimi, sushi, oysters on the half shell, crab legs, Singapore noodles with shrimp, coconut-macadamia-nut-crusted chicken, grilled London broil, kalua pig spring rolls and more. Two cocktails are included.

>> A trolley will take guests to the Hawaii Theatre for the 7:30 p.m. performance. VIP seating will be provided.

>> A dessert party after the concert at Palomino Euro Bistro will feature the restaurant's signature items bread pudding and tiramisu.

Brickman's "Love Songs & Lullabies" concerts will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12 and 4 p.m. Oct. 13. Tickets are $30 and $35, with discounts for Hawaii Theatre members, students, seniors and military. Call 528-0506.

A Taste of Kapolei

Restaurants from throughout Oahu will make the trek out to the west side for the annual Taste at Kapolei, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday on the Ko Olina Resort grounds.

The oceanside event on the lagoon lawn near the Ko Olina marina will feature 20 guests chefs, beer and wine stations and a margarita bar.

Participating restaurants include Brew Moon Restaurant and Microbrewery, Compadre's Bar and Grill, Dixie Grill, Don Ho's Island Grill, Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant, Hong Kong Harborview, Ryan's Grill, Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar, Sunset Grill and Kincaid's Fish, Chop and Steakhouse. The Waikiki Prince Hotel and the Ihilani resort will also be represented, along with the Leeward Community College culinary program.

Entertainment will be by Rolando Sanchez and Salsa Hawaii and $7 boat rides of the marina will be offered.

Cost is $50 in advance or $60 at the door ($25 children). Proceeds benefit Leeward area schools; $20,000 was raised last year. Call 722-8155 or visit www.thetasteatkapolei.com.

Ariel has much to offer

Chef Steven Ariel offers a five-course Winez & Grindz dinner Friday at the Pineapple Room at Macy's Ala Moana.

The menu includes Chilled Lobster Salad (with Cattier "Premier Cru" Brut), Sautéed Cornmeal Scallops (Muller Thurgau, Paul Furst, 1999), Unilateral Seared Crispy Skinned Salmon (Charles Melton "Rose of Virginia," 2000) and Poha Berry Glazed Lamb (Alan Wong's "Cabernet Cabernet," 2000).
