Police say they will be cracking down on illegal parking around Aloha Stadium for University of Hawaii's football game Saturday against Southern Methodist University by issuing citations and towing cars.

"We've been getting many complaints of people parking their cars on grass medials and embankments," said Maj. Robert Prasser of the Honolulu Police Department Traffic Division.

Traffic comes to a halt on the H-1 freeway onramp north of the stadium when motorists back their vehicles onto the grass before the game and run across the onramp to get to the stadium.

The same thing happens again after the game as people head back to their vehicles and try to enter the onramp, Prasser said.

Another area where people park illegally is just off Aiea Access Road west of the stadium near the cemetery. People have held tailgate parties there, also.

On Friday, police will begin cordoning off those and other "high risk" areas with yellow tape. There will also be more solo bike and traffic control officers assigned during the game, Prasser said.

Just as they did for the first home against Eastern Illinois on Aug. 31, Honolulu Stadium officials have arranged for overflow parking at Radford High School and Kam Drive Inn with shuttles to the stadium.
