The state of a union

The National Association of Government Employees announced yesterday that David Holway, chief negotiator for state government employees in Massachusetts, was elected president at its just-concluded national convention.

In its announcement the NAGE, parent organization of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, the International Brotherhood of Corrections Officers and the International Association of EMTs and Paramedics claimed 40,000 members throughout the country "& Hawaii."

Huh?

NAGE Hawaii officials got a chuckle out of the separation of country and state in the release written by union official Ed Gillooly.

"I don't think he's ever been in Hawaii," said union executive Dick Tam.

"I don't think he's ever been out of Boston," quipped Rich Zamora, who identified himself as the executive director of NAGE "for the country of Hawaii" where some 1,200 members reside.

Nick's new lease

Nick's Fishmarket has more than survived last year's ownership transition of The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui with a new 10-year lease.

"We had an existing lease but they wanted to ... reiterate their commitment to us," said Aaron Placourakis, president and chief executive officer of Tri-Star Restaurant Group, parent company of Nick's on Maui.

"We're the only independent operator within a (Fairmont) property," which includes an extensive list of upscale hotels and resorts throughout North America.

The restaurant was brought to they Valley Isle in 1998 by Chuck Sweeney, a customer of Placourakis' two Honolulu restaurants, Aaron's Atop the Ala Moana and Sarento's Top of the I in the Ilikai. Sweeney developed the resort property in 1991 and along with partners bought the resort back from Japanese lenders seven years later.
