Show your Spam
flair at Maui fair

The Maui County Fair offers three opportunities for amateur cooks to strut their stuff, one a competition in healthy cooking, the others -- well, they involve pizza and Spam.

Turkey SPAM Recipe Competition: Categories are appetizer, casserole, stew, stir-fry, salad and sandwich. Each entry must use at least one 12-ounce can of SPAM Oven Roasted Turkey. Recipes are limited to 10 ingredients and 30 minutes cooking time, to be judged on taste, appearance and originality.

First prize is $150 cash, plus the chance to compete in the national Spam competition. Register from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Judging will be at 7 p.m. Call (808) 871-4115.

Ultimate Pizza Contest for Kidz: The Maui 4-H competition is for original pizza recipes prepared solely by children. Entries will be judged on taste, texture, originality, ease of preparation and appearance, in junior (ages 6-12) and senior (13-17) divisions.

Register from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday in the Maui Farm Bureau Tent near the pool. Contestants must be Maui residents. First prize in each division is $50 cash. One entry per contestant, and all entries must be accompanied by a signed entry form. For forms call (808) 878-8501 or e-mail takamine@hgea.org

On Grandma's Table: A competition for fast, simple, healthy recipes that use Maui agricultural products. Entries will be judged on taste, "comfort appeal," nutritional value, originality and ease of preparation in two divisions, youth and adult.

Bring a prepared sample of your dish, plus a typed copy of your recipe to the Horticulture Exhibit from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday. One entry per person. Judging will take place at 2 p.m. at the same place.

Prizes include gift certificates for adults and airline tickets and movie tickets for kids. Sponsored by the Start Living Healthy campaign of the Hawaii Department of Health. Call (808) 244-3242.

The fair runs Thursday to Sunday at the War Memorial Gym. Call (808) 242-2721.
