spiritual retreat set for
tomorrow at 6 p.m.

North Shore residents can comment on a proposed spiritual retreat center in Pupukea at a 6 p.m. hearing tomorrow at Sunset Beach Elementary.

A Charitable Foundation Corp., a nonprofit group, wants to donate 63 acres on the north rim of Oahu's Waimea Valley for a state park, and also to establish a private, nondenominational spiritual retreat center on 31 acres nearby. The land is mauka of Puu O Mahuka Heiau State Park.

A public hearing is required to ask the state Board of Land & Natural Resources to rezone 18.5 acres of the land from limited to general use. That rezoning would allow a road to the land from Maulukua Road.

The sanctuary would consist of about 5,000 square feet of buildings including a meditation chapel, central hall, kitchen and dining areas, office and sleeping quarters, all in plantation style.
