Down with old, in with new school at Kakaako

Demolition work is scheduled to begin today in Kakaako, clearing the way for a new $300 million University of Hawaii medical school.

The old state Department of Agriculture building is set to be torn down starting at 8 a.m. The property along Honolulu's waterfront will become the John A. Burns School of Medicine.

The first phase of the school is to open in 2005, including classrooms, a child care center, a fitness center and research facilities.

Private residential and retail development is expected to grow up in the area around the school.

University of Hawaii President Evan Dobelle said the school will focus on research and will not develop into a teaching hospital.

The school will stand alongside Waterfront Park, which will be retained.

The medical school represents a turnaround for the mostly industrial area between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu. Kakaako has been the subject of several plans that have fallen through.

In addition to the new facility, the university is considering using several floors of office space in the adjacent former Gold Bond Building, which overlooks the site.

The University of Hawaii raised $150 million in bond sales -- a third from Hawaii investors -- to help pay for the new school. Another $150 million is to come from private money raised by the university.

The state has also pledged to spend up to $17 million a year to pay for the center, which will include a cancer research component.

Video to teach about judicial independence

The state Judiciary is using a video presented by the Hawaii Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates to educate the public about judicial independence.

"Broken Scales: Justice Under Influence" will be broadcast on Oceanic Channel 16 and KITV 4 News.

The video has also been distributed to intermediate and high schools for civics and social studies classes.

KITV 4 News will air the video Oct. 26 at 5:30 p.m.

Oceanic Channel 16 will air the video Oct. 6 and 20 at 6 p.m., and Oct. 9 and 23 at 6:30 p.m.
