Three isle schools have been removed from the list of failing schools whose students are eligible to transfer to higher-performing schools or receive other services under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, the state said.

However, 82 high-poverty isle schools remain on the list because they failed to meet progress goals in math, reading and attendance, according to the Department of Education.

The No Child Left Behind Act requires schools in low-income areas that receive federal funds to improve school performance.

Parents of students at 82 high-poverty schools are eligible to transfer to higher-performing schools or receive free tutoring and other services under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, the state Department of Education said.

The schools have not improved based on the Stanford Achievement Test results for the last two years. However, August Ahrens Elementary, Helemano Elementary and Waimea Middle School did improve their test scores and were removed from the list of failing schools.

Parents at the schools that have not improved test scores have until Sept. 30 to apply for transfers to other schools on the same island. However, the DOE says many schools that students may want to transfer to cannot take any new students or only have openings in certain grade levels.

The highest priority for transfers will be given to low-income students who have the greatest academic need, the DOE said.

Parents should be notified if their children are eligible for transfers or tutoring. Information on transfers and the No Child Left Behind law is available online at doe.k12.hi.us/ nclb.
