Kennelly’s back holds up
as she wins second heat


Local surfer Keala Kennelly, ranked No. 5 in the world, won her second-round heat at the Figueira Pro at Figueira da Foz, Portugal, yesterday.

She beat Amee Donohoe and eliminated wildcard Patricia Lopes. Kennelly won the last WCT event in Tahiti four months ago, but suffers from a back injury.

"I hate surfing in that (second) round," Kennelly said. "I've been having a lot of problems with my back, and my body's not doing what my brain is telling it to do."

Fellow Hawaii surfer Rochelle Ballard also advanced by taking second in her heat.

HHSAA Classic live on Internet

Hawaii Sports Network and Champions in Paradise Radio will provide live coverage of tomorrow's HHSAA Football Classic via the Internet.

The doubleheader will be broadcast live on KUMU-AM 1500 and a link to the games will appear at www.hawaiisportsnetwork.com.

Kahuku plays Long Beach Poly at 5 p.m. and St. Louis plays De La Salle at 8.

Barry Villamil will host the pregame show while Bob Hogue (play-by-play) and John Nolan (color commentary) are slated to call the games.

Top performers

Sara Pilgreen, Hawaii-Hilo volleyball: Pilgreen was the PacWest Conference co-player of the week for her near-perfect performance against Western New Mexico last Friday. The junior outside hitter was 19 for 36 with only one error and recorded 11 digs in her Vulcans' first conference game. She followed it up on Tuesday by pounding out 35 kills on 70 attempts in a loss to Montana State-Billings.

Sayuri Kusutani, Hawaii Pacific cross country: The 43-year-old won her first collegiate race last week, beating teammate Nina Christensen by 14 seconds on a muddy track at Hawaii-Hilo yesterday. He effort helped HPU sweep the top three spots and win the meet by 39 points.

Petar Semac, Chaminade Water Polo: The senior scored two goals in the fourth quarter to will the Silverswords to a 9-7 win over Santa Clara last Saturday and propel Chaminade into the Top 20.
