Musashimaru takes
sole lead at Autumn sumoTOKYO (AP) - Yokozuna Musashimaru defeated Takanowaka to take the sole lead Wednesday, the 11th day of the 15-day Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.
Five wrestlers trailed the leader one win off the pace.
Wrestling in the final bout at Ryogoku Kokugikan, Hawaii-born Musashimaru easily shoved out No. 4-ranked maegashira Takanowaka for his 10th victory against one loss. Takanowaka slipped to 6-5.
Fellow yokozuna Takanohana pushed out newly promoted ozeki Asashoryu after surviving the Mongolian's fierce arm thrusts and leg tripping attempt, leaving both 9-2.
Takanohana, who returned to the ring after sitting out an unprecedented seven tournaments due to a knee injury, is desperately seeking to win the tournament to silence his doubters.
In other major bouts, Chiyotaikai (9-2) deployed a flurry of fierce arm thrusts to push ozeki Musoyama to the ringside and pulled down the foe to the dirt. The burly ozeki faced his fourth defeat against seven victories.
Ozeki Kaio grabbed Tamanoshima's belt to force out No. 5 maegashira, collecting his ninth win against two defeats. Tamanoshima sank to 5-6.
Also one victory behind was No. 7-maegashira Kotomitsuki (9-2), who pushed down Akinoshima, a No. 13 maegashira. Akinoshima slipped to 5-6.
Mongolian Kyokutenho (6-5), a No. 3-ranked maegashira, slapped down Miyabiyama, giving the top-ranked maegashira his seventh defeat against four wins.
Kyokushuzan, also from Mongolia, improved to 6-5 after the No. 11 maegashira pushed down No. 13-maegashira Asanowaka, who suffered his sixth defeat against five victories.
